Grandma’s Favorite Sundae by Dawn Grantham is a children’s picture book about a little girl named Sundae who wants to create something special for the fundraiser that is being held at her school. However, the true heart of the story is the bond that one grandchild shares with her grandmother. The narration of the story alternates between a melodic cadence and a standard narrative in a beautiful way that doesn’t disrupt the experience of reading the story itself. While it is a touching story, there is also an educational element that readers will be able to use to learn the art of crocheting. The instructions provided are simple for the intended audience.
Dawn Grantham’s Grandma’s Favorite Sundae is a truly moving children’s book that contains many treasures. It can be appreciated for the entertainment value of the story, together with the educational aspect, but there is also a lined journal at the end to encourage the creativity of the child reader. The illustrations by Demont Pinder are vibrant and speak in a way that echoes. Pops of neon pink and shocks of teal and lime-green give the book an added splash of whimsy, while still evoking the warm sentiment of a family connection. A family is a bright and colorful rainbow of light. This is the perfect gift for someone who loves the art of creation and the family.
