Gus Gets Adopted and Saves the Day by Alisa Guttadauro is a lovely story about adopting from shelters. Gus lives at the Sunny Day Animal Shelter, but every time adoption day arrives, he always gets overlooked for younger cats and kittens, even though he’s only 18 months old. The birds tell him he has it easy compared to them, but he’s still sad until the day Anna visits and chooses him. He’s over the moon but also scared that he won’t settle into his new home. What happens when Anna takes him home? Not only does he make new friends, but he also saves the day when something terrible happens.
I love books like Gus Gets Adopted and Saves the Day by Alisa Guttadauro, a lovely story with beautiful illustrations by Jeanine Henning. It’s fun to read, but it does give readers the message that shelters are the best place to get your pets from, not breeders, and not to overlook older animals – they need a home just as much as young ones do. Alisa has written in simple language so that kids will be able to follow the story easily and enjoy the adventures of Gus and his new friend. Most people think in terms of dogs when it comes to adopting pets from shelters, so it’s nice to see a story focused on cats for a change. While humans do play a part in the story, the animals are front and center, and each one has its own unique personality – you’ll love them all. Kids will enjoy reading this story, and it might make them curious enough to start asking about shelters and wanting to adopt. Recommended reading for all kids, no matter their age, at home and school.
