Joy Michelle Austin’s novel, Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition, is a gripping psychological story of the survival of a father and his daughter under horrific circumstances. The shocking story emerges through letters that Rick Wentworth wrote to his daughter Lily over ten years of unrelenting trauma, of their survival, and love, when they had only each other. Rick starts writing the letters as soon as he holds his newborn daughter in his arms. Those letters, full of love and hope, are interwoven into the overall story, in the present time, when Lily is 25, and about fifteen years after Rick and Lily are restored to a life of freedom, of moving forward from the darkness, suffering, and grief of the past.

Right from the start, I was totally absorbed in reading Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition for its complex characters and compelling storyline of unwavering love and faith. For me, Rick’s letters to Lily from her birth to when she turned ten, as well as later ones, gave the story immense depth, and the characters sprang to life. As I read the early letters, I felt that Rick was going through a profound spiritual journey at a time when someone else controlled his life. His life moved forward the moment he held Lily in his arms and realized that Lily was a gift from God, giving him purpose and a reason to keep living. I liked how the story covers Lily’s character development. I loved the strong, loving bond between Rick and Lily, even when Lily was still a toddler. I loved this story because of how Rick is able to help Lily through her difficulties, because of the spiritual journey he has gone through. I highly recommend Joy Michelle Austin’s faith-centered novel, Half Agony, Half Hope: Dear Lily Edition. It is an incredible and compelling story of how a father chooses love and hope to guide him, to love and protect his daughter, through a time of extreme duress, fear, and hopelessness.
