When her father's second wife called to inform Lori L. Lee that he had passed away, supposedly from a heart attack, Lori took the news as confirmation that a difficult chapter in her life was coming to an end. As she reflects on her relationship with him, Lori finds herself pulled back into painful memories of an abusive father and a mother who drank too much. In this memoir, she reflects on the physical and emotional toll it took on her growing up in a home where the truth was a relative concept, until the day she decided to leave. Lori does not hold back as she tells all in Half Penny: A Memoir of Tangled Truths.

Lori Lee recounts over sixteen years of physical, verbal, and emotional abuse in her thought-provoking memoir, Half Penny. She starts by describing her parents' happy beginnings, helping readers see that behind her pain was a foundation of a unique romance between a misunderstood woman and an imperfect man. She transitions between past and present often, which attentive readers will recognize as her way of connecting her current actions to her childhood trauma. One especially compelling episode involved her mother's strange late-night activities with Lori, which only became clear when her grandmother explained them to her later in life. She relates the narrative in the third person, subtly adding emotional distance, which, along with her many conflicts with her father and the tragic circumstances of her mother's life, immerses readers. This makes it more relatable to those facing the challenges of raising a family during tough times while striving to avoid repeating their parents' mistakes. Half Penny is a book I recommend that all parents read to gain better insight into their children.
