“I would always rather be happy than dignified.” -- Jane Eyre. In Hall of Deception by P.L. Jonas, Dee Danes accepts the tutoring position at Rothmorton Hall in Massachusetts, partly to avoid being with her hateful cousin who raised her. She constantly compares herself to Jane Eyre, her favorite heroine. Dee’s feelings for handsome Hugh Roth are uncertain, but his secretive past makes her curious to know more about him. Although she likes teaching six-year-old Ellen, Dee becomes wary of some bizarre things that have happened at the mansion since her arrival. As more mysterious events occur, Dee is unsure if she can trust Sylvi, Ellen’s nurse, who also has secrets to hide. Dee feels insecure as she attempts to adjust to a new lifestyle and Hugh’s growing attraction. What would Jane Eyre do in this situation?
Hall of Deception is a charming, light-hearted romantic suspense story. The 1953 post-war setting is Plymouth, Massachusetts with characters displaying outgoing personalities. Ellen is adorable and Dee has a warm, caring, and curious personality. P.L. Jonas captivates readers who like a bit of mystery and suspense mingled with a whimsical touch of Jane Eyre. I was touched by Dee’s doubts and expectations of herself. The mystery was not what I expected but I was pleased by the creativity of the author’s writing. She had me guessing as the plot thickened. I enjoyed reading Hall of Deception and know that fans of Charlotte Bronte's novel, Jane Eyre, will too.
