Jennifer is a stubborn young woman who is questioning her suffocating marriage. Hank is an old man who has seen tragedy and joy in his life and shares it in storytelling every Friday with the locals of Oak Springs, Florida. Jennifer and her husband stop at a gas station for gas and a rest, after a harrowing experience of her almost drowning on a beach in Destin. Hank is in the middle of one of his storytelling sessions. Jennifer is fascinated with the story and Hank, and feels a strange pull towards the old man. Hank also feels a connection to Jennifer. As Jennifer returns to Oak Springs the next week, she knows that something special is happening; she just has no clue what it could be. It becomes more intriguing when Pam, (who has befriended Jennifer), a regular to the storytelling session, offers her an old newspaper article that has a picture strongly resembling Jennifer. There are many questions and few answers as Jennifer shares this information with her family. The conclusion left me crying both tears of joy and sadness.
Hank: A Storytelling Story is a story within a story and really good reading. I really enjoyed it. Rick Burnham combined many things to make this book special, including a little mystery; a loving family; a glimpse of life in long ago Florida and unusual circumstances. I was able to read Hank quickly and find out the surprising and happy ending. I highly recommend this book for all ages and for anyone who just enjoys a good story.
