John Fergusson’s The Ascension Dimension presents humanity as living below the place God intended, tracing the path back through Jesus Christ. Fergusson begins with Adam, whose fall places creation in mortality separated from its inheritance. Jesus appears as the last Adam, whose death gives way to resurrection before ascension restores humanity to its intended position in God. Fergusson then describes salvation as awakening to a reality believers already possess in Christ, with the Holy Spirit leading them into sonship and life directed by faith. That awakening carries a purpose, since Fergusson sees humanity’s restoration as part of creation’s return to God. Christ raises humanity so creation itself can return to God, with chosen love completing the movement from a “bottomless pit” to a “topless heaven.”
John Fergusson’s The Ascension Dimension is outstanding Christian theological nonfiction, with a distinctly individual frame that shines through lived fellowship with God. Fergusson speaks to readers in all settings, like meeting Christian ideas through online discussion, giving the book timely relevance as belief enters daily conduct through a conversational style with an accessible educational character. That gift for explanation is especially evident in his reading of Galatians 4, where Paul’s heir, living under guardians before adulthood, appears recognizable through the language of family relationships. Fergusson also brings an original theological perspective to known scripture; the standout to me being his treatment of New Jerusalem as the “last woman” that extends the biblical Bride image through a counterpart to Eve, showing the reach of his interpretation. Well written and thoughtful, readers drawn to biblical interpretation will really appreciate this.
