Haunted America by Steven Cortinas follows Houston prosecutor Leslie Berrios after every building in the United States becomes home to a creature drawn from the fears of its occupants. As the attacks spread, Leslie learns that they lead back to Miguel Torres, the cartel leader she is preparing to prosecute. Torres answers to an interdimensional entity known as the Puppet Master, which seeks a secret ability Leslie has concealed since childhood. Her power can affect the creatures killing nationwide, making her the invasion’s target. Pursued through a city collapsing under supernatural assault, Leslie must keep that gift out of the Puppet Master’s reach before it can use her to direct the creatures consuming America. Houston becomes the battleground for a confrontation that could determine who commands the entire country’s new monsters.

Haunted America treats fear like prime real estate, since each occupied building becomes a breeding ground for the monster imagined inside it. The supernatural design is pure gold because each haunt arises from a mind, giving the nationwide outbreak rules that register instantly as Houston falls into ruin. Leslie Berrios brings serious firepower, though every major use punishes her body, making her ability dangerous each time it appears. Ricky, her police officer brother, owns the swagger department, but his bravado comes from fierce devotion. Mason, the district attorney’s investigator, offers straight gallows humor suited to a man prepared to face death beside Leslie. Their shared history makes the catastrophe belong to the group. All in, the result is an A+ first book in The Haunted Trilogy, and I'm excited to see where Cortinas takes us next. Very highly recommended.
