Creativity implies self-confidence and develops critical thinking. This also allows us to express ourselves freely, which helps children grow in an emotionally healthy way. Jenny Shann promotes these ideas in Hermes and the Magic Map. In this story, Hermes paints by his bedroom window with his loyal dog, Honey. Using his drawing pad and magic markers, he creates a beautiful landscape. He draws a colorful sky, the sea, and an island with a cave which he marks an X. When Hermes finishes, he looks for his grandmother, and when he shows her the drawing, she points out of the house. Everything he has painted has come true. Excited, Hermes draws his friend Star so that she can accompany him to the island. When he finishes his drawing, she is already in front of him. They embark together on a fun adventure on the island, accompanied by Honey.
The story is fun and entertaining, with easy-to-read sentences emphasizing several positive ideas. Jenny Shann teaches us the value of art through Hermes' drawing. She also shows us the fun of exploring and connecting with nature. But, in particular, she highlights the value of friendship and companionship. The plot is interesting due to the character dynamics in a fantasy environment and the unexpected solutions to challenges. The pace is active because the adventure takes place in different scenarios. The images by Jim Starr are vibrant and full of life, with tones that reflect each moment of the day. I found the sunset ones impressive. Hermes and the Magic Map will inspire children to use their imagination positively.
