An exhilarating romance/mystery novel, Holbrook Manor by Gail Meath follows the story of a man who leads a reclusive life to protect and maintain custody of his young daughter. To conceal his past, Bret Carson lives hidden from the public at his Texas ranch. Rumors abound about his identity including that he is a deranged man who escaped from an asylum. When Sydney Prescott first lays her eyes on him, she is surprised and intrigued. Bret is nothing like the rumors she has heard about him. A bright and beautiful school teacher, Sydney hopes to leave her childhood home and discover more exciting places. When an opportunity presents itself to her to finally leave her small town, she hesitates. Her fate becomes intertwined with Bret’s as he faces his past.
In Holbrook Manor, Gail Meath balances tense scenes with lively conversations. Action scenes are often unpredictable and sometimes take tragic turns. Characters’ roles are well done starting from the main characters. Sydney and Bret are interesting and dynamic. Both are audacious and loyal, willing to risk their lives for each other. Other characters’ roles are well-executed: one plays the role of Sydney’s confidant while her older brother acts as her guardian. The antagonists’ roles are also diverse. Some come from powerful families while others are against Bret and Sydney’s bond. The plot moves fast, including details and events that are captivating. Holbrook Manor by Gail Meath is an absorbing read. It combines mystery and romance with historical details and contains a surprising plot.
