Michael Jordan once said, “Some people want it to happen, some wish it would happen, others make it happen.” That message is the central theme of Home Court: A Basketballer’s Ditty by C. Behrens. This story is based on the author’s award-winning poem and celebrates the love of basketball. It captures the drive, discipline, and emotion behind it. Alongside the poem and lively illustrations, each page offers fun facts about the game and bits of history. This book encourages young readers to dream big and embrace the challenges that come with pursuing their passions. The engaging blend of poetry, artwork, and educational content makes it a perfect read for children and adults who love sports and storytelling.

Home Court by C. Behrens is a delightful mix of poetry, imagination, and basketball know-how that’s perfect for sports fans like me. I appreciated how it seamlessly combined fun facts with the emotional journey of playing hoops. It also taught me a thing or two. I didn’t know that sneakers were originally called plimsolls or that there are actually different ball sizes depending on who’s playing. The colorful illustrations by Bryan Werts bring the energy of the game to life, making it an engaging read for all ages. This book is excellent for kids who love sports and could even be used during gym class before starting the unit on basketball. I found it genuinely inspiring. Diana Taurasi once said, “Every time you step on the court, it’s an opportunity to get better,” which basically means if at first you don’t succeed, try, try again; a mantra that applies to anyone with a dream they’d like to pursue.
