House Made of Sound by Freeman Jayce is a speculative fiction novel revolving around Jensen Bennett. Troubled and separated from his wife, he's controlled by his employer, Wicked Records. Seeking redemption with the hit band Quiet Catastrophe, Bennett's own misconduct estranges him from the group. Wicked Records is convinced the band breached their contract, secretly recording their third album. Bennett must retrieve the master recordings by any means. Assisted by the medium Daphne, he gains backstage access but finds nothing. Determined, he stows away on the band's plane, hoping to locate the album and restore his life. The plane crashes, and Bennett awakens in the afterlife. Tasked with finding deceased Quiet Catastrophe members and the elusive third album, he must complete his mission before returning to his body.

What would you do if you were in the afterlife but knew you'd be back? Who would you try to find? What would you make a priority to discover? My answer is unlikely to be anything even remotely close to the same as Jensen Bennett's, but holy moly did I have a ridiculously fun time following him around in House Made of Sound by Freeman Jayce. I get it though. Jensen has something to prove to the world of the living and how far one might go not to exit the world with the snark of others in their ear is a pretty decent incentive. "Why do you hate yourself, Jensen? Be honest. Is it because you’re a loser? Or maybe you hate yourself because you can’t please a woman, no matter how hard you try.” There's also the money, and the dirty music industry that has the power to eat a soul like Jensen up, kind of literally. Kind of. Jayce is a limitless well of creativity with the skill of engaging prose, authentic dialogue, and intelligent wit. I went into this thinking it would be a simple weekend diversion and set it down with a smile that only a novel of this quality and caliber can generate. Very highly recommended.

Freeman Jayce takes belief in the afterlife to a new level in House Made of Sound. Jensen Bennett discovered the band Quiet Catastrophe and helped them to stardom with their first two albums. The band had breached their contract by recording a third album in secret, and Jensen must find the album. Jensen is on the same plane as the band, to try to steal the album, when the plane crashes. When Jensen wakes up, he is in some kind of afterlife. His body is at the crash site, and the members of the band have passed away. The only member of the band who is aware of the location of the third record is Hedley, its rock star. Jensen needs to find Hedley’s spirit in the afterlife before he is pulled back to reality.

House Made of Sound by Freeman Jayce had me hooked from the start of this adventure between the worlds of life and death. The afterlife was depicted with happy places and spaces where I would not want to be stuck. I was introduced to the crazy world of the music industry. The characters are realistic and relatable. The background stories of the characters were interesting and gave me a better understanding of them. The events were vividly portrayed and had me guessing until the end. I had to know what would happen next. The story is beautifully written and captured my attention. I was left with the question of whether death is the end or only the beginning...
