If you love sleuth stories, grab yourself a copy of Shawn Adair Johnston's How The Blind Detective And His Seeing Eye Dog Saved The Narwhals. In the not-so-distant future, scientific advancements such as synthetic augmentation of animals' intellectual capabilities have made human-animal interaction and collaboration easier in various fields. A string of rising poaching incidents of narwhals in the Arctic forces the Royal Canadian Mounted Police to seek famous blind detective Peter Straw and his augmented dog Watson's help. When a beloved police dog gets poisoned, and an augmented porpoise named Emma has a near-death experience, the case turns even more sinister, leaving Peter embroiled in an investigation with ever-rising stakes. With the help of Aristotle, the augmented chimp, Watson, and Emma, Peter must now save the dwindling narwhal population from extinction.

Author Shawn Adair Johnston's suspenseful crime tale uses the unique premise of augmented animals as main characters, keeping the reader on their toes with a delicious blend of intrigue and thrilling moments. The author keeps the plot moving at a decent pace with Peter Straw, a tenacious detective, as the primary protagonist. There are some real-life parallels as to how Aristotle Jones constantly finds himself discriminated against by his colleagues, based on who he is. The characters were well-realized, and the main characters are immensely likable. Peter, Watson, Emma, Aristotle, and Billy were my favorites among the bunch. I would recommend How The Blind Detective And His Seeing Eye Dog Saved The Narwhals to readers who enjoy a well-written sleuth story.
