What if trying new foods could be part of a new adventure? How to Cure a Yucky Yeti by Brittany Plumeri begins with the young scientist, Ella. She’s on a mission to help “yucky” yetis—kids who think new foods are gross—realize that trying new things can bring both joy and flavor. Each meal introduces a new child (and yucky yeti) facing an unfamiliar food. By following along with silly instructions, readers become part of the story by taking bites and giving their own verdicts. The point isn’t about whether they like the food; it’s about overcoming fear, and that, paired with Oana Gheorghe’s bright illustrations, makes for an engaging read. By the end, kids are invited to create their own “yummy in your tummy” lists and even get a special certificate for their bravery. It’s a cheerful, interactive read that makes mealtimes less stressful and more adventurous.

As a former picky eater, I would’ve loved this story during my icky food phase as a child. I’m sure How to Cure a Yucky Yeti by Brittany Plumeri could’ve helped me get over my food issues much earlier. As an educator, this would be a great book to use when discussing foods kids don’t want to try. The playful rhythm of ‘STOP! Nose! Bite! Pose!’ makes read-alouds exciting, inviting kids to join in while also letting them anticipate what’s coming next. It’s a gentle reminder that giving something different a try—whether food or other experiences—can be safe, rewarding, and even a little exciting. I could picture a classroom bulletin board titled The Yeti Tried It—Did You?, where each child creates a yeti and lists a food they’ve recently tried or want to try. Each page bursts with color and whimsical details in the artwork, giving children plenty to look at while they follow along. It’s also the kind of story parents could bring to the dinner table, turning what might be a stressful mealtime into a delightful challenge the whole family can share. Altogether, it’s a lively and encouraging book that turns mealtime challenges into opportunities for fun, courage, and connection.
