Known as a talented and witty storyteller, Michael Balter has captivated audiences for years with tales of his extraordinary life as a German emigrant, a Vietnam War air traffic controller, a Silicon Valley pioneer, and a serial entrepreneur. One of his business partners was kidnapped by a Russian mobster, which inspired the plot of Chasing Money. In the early 2000s, Michael co-owned an art company that signed a licensing deal with the Vatican, leading to numerous trips to Italy. Those experiences provided rich inspiration for The Vatican Deal.

Michael lived in Oregon for 29 years and now makes his home in Charlevoix, Michigan, where he is hard at work on the third novel in the Marty and Bo thriller series.

Michael Balter’s The Vatican Deal is a must-read for lovers of gripping high-stakes crime thrillers with a touch of adventure, action, and drama. Spinning a tangled web of mystery around an ingenious plot, Balter unfolds the story on a double timeline. The edge-of-your-seat suspense and the spell-binding plot twists hooked me. The evocative depictions brought the scenes to life on the pages, making me feel like I was next to the cast in every scene, closely watching their moves. The conversations were sharp, lively, and entertaining. They gave depth to the characters’ conflicts. Balter brings out the well-crafted cast’s emotions, juxtaposing their complex traits and allowing me to connect with them. This is an incredible second installment in the series. I loved it. I’m on my way to find the previous installment.

The Vatican Deal by Michael Balter centers on business partners Marty and Bo as a major deal in Italy turns into a struggle to stay alive. With Russian funding behind them and guidance from art dealer Natalya, they head to Rome and Naples to close the purchase of the historic Chiurazzi Foundry, a business linked to priceless Renaissance molds and a rare license tied to the Vatican. What begins as a risky business deal starts to unravel once threats surface, violence erupts at the foundry, and a trusted ally is seriously injured. When Natalya disappears under suspicious circumstances, Marty and Bo find themselves boxed in, caught between the harsh Naples Camorra, the Russian Vory, and quiet pressure linked to the Vatican. Old mistakes resurface, loyalties are stretched thin, and the deal reveals intentions far darker than anyone expected. The story moves fast through Rome, Naples, and Capri, mixing art history, organized crime, and corporate greed, before building to a tight final clash where survival, truth, and friendship are on the line.

The Vatican Deal by Michael Balter stands out because the title signals more than a business transaction; it points to moral trade-offs, power, and secrecy tied to one of the most guarded institutions on earth. The places feel authentic and lived in, particularly Rome and Naples, where beauty and danger coexist. The attention given to the foundry, Vatican clearance, and mafia ties gives the story more weight without dragging its pace. The characters are believable and steady, with Marty’s careful nature balancing Bo’s confidence, while Natalya stays composed, sharp, and hard to figure out. The story flows at a smooth and steady pace. It builds tension through moments like a staged accident and a kidnapping. The language is sharp and visual, which lets both high-speed action and subtle tension come across with ease. Balter delivers a smart, gripping thriller. I recommend this book to readers drawn to global crime, art-driven intrigue, and morally gray deals. It earns its rating for drive, focus, and atmosphere.

Despite their initial struggles, long-time friends Bo and Marty have finally gotten their venture on track, thanks mainly to the unique assistance of their Russian Oligarch partner and his representative on the company's board of directors, Natalya. When Natalya steers them toward Italy to buy an art foundry from the Vatican, Bo and Marty get to work securing it, but the longer they stay, the more they notice there is more to this deal than meets the eye. After a couple of close shaves, the two friends realize there are dangerous factions interested in their prize, and they are ready to shed blood if need be. Bo and Marty will have to dig deep if they want to come out of this assignment unscathed in Michael Balter's The Vatican Deal.

Michael Balter amps up the suspense in the latest instalment of the Marty and Bo thriller series. Subtle references in the dialogue lay out Bo and Marty's business, highlighting key points in their relationship with Natalya to create a comprehensive origin story that will delight enthusiasts while bringing new readers up to speed with the series. The dialogue has Balter's trademark blend of mild drama and snarky ripostes, which come to the fore whenever the duo confronts dangerous individuals. The drama of Marty and Natalya's evolving relationship is balanced with hard-hitting, impressively detailed fight scenes that will appeal to action enthusiasts. A rapid pace, strategically placed clues, and striking humour, such as Natalya's habit of twisting English idioms, make The Vatican Deal entertaining and appealing to a wide range of readers.
