How to Develop Happiness: A Doctor's Journey to Find Meaning and Be Happy in Difficult Times is a self-help manual. Dr. Rafal Zielinski writes that people can live enjoyable and meaningful lives by applying the philosophies and practices that he has learned through his personal experiences and work. The book chapters do not follow the traditional format but are a series of essays that address specific topics. The author calls it a “system.” Some of the 20-plus topics include self-assessment, risk-taking, and planning. Zielinski also draws on other successful individuals such as Mark Twain, Steve Jobs, and Dale Carnegie for ideas and insight. Additionally, he uses concepts from The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People by Steven Covey. Zielinski is the son of two doctors and is an ear, nose, and throat specialist.
How to Develop Happiness is a powerful book. Because Dr. Rafal Zielinski has led a successful and meaningful life he has much material to pass on to his readers. Although written by a physician and primarily intended for other doctors, this fine book is useful to anyone who wants to get more out of life. It’s not only aimed at those who are going through what the subtitle refers to as difficult times. Whether readers are experiencing good times, bad times, or somewhere in between, they’ll find a wealth of useful information and inspiration in this book. As a bonus, those who haven’t read The Seven Habits of Highly Effective People will get an excellent overview of that highly-regarded book. I recommend Zielinski’s book to anyone who wants to change their lives for the better, develop a sense of purpose, and live more happily from day-to-day. Anyone can achieve that by practicing the principles shared in this book.
