I Dreamt of Trees is a science fiction novel by Gilles DeCruyenaere, which focuses on Jason Crawford, a man whose purpose in life is to seek out the domineering alien race that poses a threat to his way of life. Like many other humans, Jason resides on a 28th-century city-ship where life is far from the Earth we know, but the pressures of government and their conspiracy theories are as pertinent as ever. When Jason stumbles upon a dangerous secret, he hides himself away in exile in the Rim: a wild, unmanaged section of the ship. Here he meets Greg, his polar opposite in personality, and they share their common goal of trying to survive amidst the dystopia all around them.

Jason Crawford was a thoroughly unlikable character from his first appearance in the book and, though author Gilles DeCruyenaere makes some clever character developments in his comparison of Jason and the seemingly sweet Greg, I still found it very hard to connect with Jason as the hero of this tale. The action of the story is well described with a great deal of macho foul language and elements such as smoking and drinking, which I think will make the book appeal hugely to fans of the action genre. Die Hard and Robocop came to my mind particularly whilst I was reading. The inclusion of the alien race in the story and its futuristic elements were very well conceived too, making I Dreamt of Trees a rip-roaring, hedonistic adventure novel.
