A spy is caught in a dangerous web of secrets in Into the Shadows by R.M. Jerome. The novel is set just before WWII starts, during the rise of Nazi Germany. It begins with Ella Vogel, a young Swiss teacher, being recruited for a mission with MI6. She’s been assigned to infiltrate Hitler’s world by befriending his mistress, Eva Braun. Vogel is intelligent and has a unique skill set that will come in handy, making her the best person to do so. The lines occasionally blur since she sort of likes Eva. The task is tricky, and she almost gets caught several times. Through it all, Ella’s heart longs for a fellow agent, Kurt Weiss, who may be dead. She holds onto memories of him and hopes to see him again. Will Ella be able to maintain her double life? And does Kurt come back?
Into the Shadows by R.M. Jerome was an interesting spy novel with a sliver of romance. The suspense kept me on my toes, and I was hooked from beginning to end. Ella lives quite a complicated life, and I became invested in the choices she had to make. Her love story with Kurt was short, but it left its mark. The fact that she spends much of the book wondering what happened to him tugged at my heart. The dynamic between her and Eva Braun was intriguing. It brought out Ella’s human side. The writing moved quickly and was easy to understand. Between the historical backdrop, the danger, and the personal relationships, I was always curious to see what would happen next. Anyone looking for a good historical fiction book or wartime spy story will want to pick this one up.
