It should have been just another day on the street. Instead, it became a career killer. For Jake Dalton, the protagonist of James Bultema's Invaders Of The Heartland, being an LAPD cop was more than just a job; it was his entire life. However, life rarely aligns with our expectations or plans. After confronting the petty politics and personal agendas of vindictive superiors, Jake resigns from the force. Without much of a plan, he returns to his small hometown of Fairview, Oklahoma, where he takes on the role of chief of police. With only four officers under his command, Jake must tackle big-city crime in a small town, facing off against outlaw bikers and a criminal syndicate that vastly outmatches his limited resources and firepower.

Action-packed and captivating, Invaders Of The Heartland by James Bultema is a first-rate crime novel. The plot is a classic cops and robbers tale where a man of integrity and honor faces those who have neither. However, beneath the straightforward plot of good versus evil lies a subtle theme of sacrifice as the protagonist gradually realizes that he has dedicated himself to serving his fellow citizens at the expense of his personal life, prompting him to address this imbalance before it’s too late. The character development is excellent, featuring a cast beyond typical stereotypes. With a brisk pace that steadily picks up steam and builds momentum, this well-crafted tale kept me on the edge of my seat. I highly recommend it to fans of the genre.
