The game is rigged, and author Ujwal Arkalgud can prove it. In Invisible Rules: How to Outsmart the Entrepreneurial Game, the author, an anthropologist-turned-founder, exposes the unwritten codes that quietly decide whose ideas gain traction, who gets funded, and which paths to success are considered “legitimate.” Bringing his experience to the work as someone who built and sold MotivBase, the author argues that the Silicon Valley model, which advocates a strategy of raising big funds, scaling fast, and sacrificing everything, only works for one percent of entrepreneurs. The other ninety-nine percent are forced to internalize invisible boundaries that strangle their ambitions before they even get started. His solution is a framework that helps entrepreneurs recognize power, create safe spaces to experiment, build credibility, challenge norms, and grow ecosystems for sustained change.

Invisible Rules delivers a path to see the invisible structure of the game and empowers readers to start rewriting the rules they never even chose. Ujwal Arkalgud integrates elements of behavioral science, anthropology, and engaging storytelling to create convincing arguments. He delivers a book that is both an empowerment and a critical exposé. I was able to underline some key lessons from this book: credibility is something you cannot buy; setbacks are catalysts for growth when handled well; and innovation happens in the space between expectation and ambition. These lessons are delivered through vivid cases, from Patagonia and Spanx to entrepreneurs struggling with credentialism, identity privilege, and the insider game. The author makes the book more practical with chapter summaries and action items. Every would-be founder needs to read this book before they start doing the groundwork for their business.
