Jill Carol’s Is It Someone You Know? starts with a crime that turned Levittown upside down when a young boy was found brutally beaten to death with a blunt object. The body was thrown in a trash bin, and it was the town’s first murder. The FBI is called in, and Detective Jennifer Cot is assigned to help with the investigation. The killer, who calls himself Phoenix, reveals a disturbing need for attention. The killer left clues such as a bloodied sneaker positioned like an arrow pointing to the victim, and a mark on the forehead. When a second boy is found murdered, the FBI and Jen know they are looking for a serial killer. During the investigation, Jen reconnects with Brian, an old school friend. There is a spark between them; they cannot deny it. Meanwhile, Detective Shea spots a suspicious man present at multiple crime scenes. This prompts the FBI to refine their psychological profile of Phoenix to stop him from escalating.
Is It Someone You Know? by Jill Carol is a tightly constructed thriller. Jen is balancing professional determination with personal vulnerability, and Brian adds warmth and grounding to Jen’s journey. The growing relationship between Jen and Brian lightened the dark and heavy mood of the plot. Detective Shea’s instincts provide a turn in the investigation. Trust, intuition, and the evil of the crimes are explored. The story was fast-paced, but it gave me enough time to process everything. I was turning the pages as fast as I could to find out who the killer was. I was easily drawn into the psychological and investigative aspects of the story. The book was excellently written and had me hooked from the start.
