Jib and Spinnaker: Sailors of the Low Seas by Betty Mermelstein is an adorable story revolving around two little mice, Jib and Spinnaker. The duo falls into a swimming pool after being chased by a dog and, while trying to get out, they come into contact with a lot of pool toys and strange things. They think they have fallen into an ocean and Spinnaker realizes that he cannot swim. They find a boat and manage to get into it. Will they both be able to handle the situation well and manage to reach the shore safely?
The story is a fun read and the author conveys some good messages to readers through Jib and Spinnaker. The illustrations are bright and lively and make the scenes more vivid with good pace and movement. They also breathe life into the characters of Jib and Spinnaker, and make them tangible to readers. It's a good bedtime storybook and can also be used for read aloud sessions in classrooms and school libraries. The characters of Jib and Spinnaker are different and readers will be entertained by their adventure after falling into the 'ocean.' The messages of teamwork and not giving up are good for young readers to incorporate into their lives. Books with messages make good storybooks as they help children understand the message better when narrated with the help of illustrations.
