Joline is the sixth installment in the Fr. Tom Series by Jim Sano, a gripping crime novel about the mysterious death of a young woman, Joline Chase, in the small coastal town of Belfast, Maine. Father Tom, visiting a friend from the seminary, finds himself drawn into the mystery when 19-year-old Joline is discovered floating in the harbor, an apparent tragedy that could be an accident, a suicide, or something far worse. As the town struggles to uncover the truth, Father Tom teams up with the reluctant sheriff, J.C. Coombs, and his loyal sidekick, Angelo, to piece together clues and confront painful secrets lurking beneath the surface. Filled with faith, humor, and friendship, this book will have you racing through the pages and guessing.
Jim Sano is a skilled storyteller with a unique talent for crafting exceptional and relatable characters. The characters are multi-dimensional: Laurie Chase, Joline’s grieving mother, struggles with her faith and feelings of guilt; Colby Chase, her husband, is overwhelmed by anger and helplessness. In a cast of townspeople, including a suspicious teacher, a mysterious fisherman, and local law enforcement, each has their own secrets. The setting vividly captures the charm of Belfast, with its historic harbor, quiet streets, and tight-knit community, a perfect backdrop for the unfolding drama. The central conflict revolves around whether Joline’s death was accidental or foul play, complicated by the community’s reluctance to confront uncomfortable truths. Themes of innocence lost, the darkness lurking beneath idyllic facades, and the possibility of forgiveness are also developed in this tale. Joline is fast-paced, and I enjoyed the intriguing characters and the exploration of the mystery.
