Journey to Justice: The Adventures of Spider and Ruby by Tanni Haas is a brilliant tale of two brave children who fight for what they believe is right. Spider lives on a boat and has been a fisherman for his entire life. His father and brother do the same. They did not choose this life for themselves as it was forced upon them. One day, Spider’s brother Luke was arrested because he dared to rebel against the system. Their world would never be the same again because they knew that whoever was arrested never returned. Spider accidentally stumbled into another part of the world and meets the clever and daring Ruby, an AquaGrower. The pair brave the ocean to rescue Luke.
Journey to Justice by Tanni Haas is one of the best books I’ve read this year. The plot kept me captivated from the very first paragraph. Although the story is set on the ocean, there is even a part where fruit and vegetables are grown in underwater greenhouses by AquaGrowers. There is plenty of action, and I wondered whether the two children would make it to The Island unscathed. The motivational speech that Spider delivered was appropriate for a child of his age. There are many interesting characters such as Josephine the cleaner, who helped the two heroes. She was easy to relate to as she showed kindness, even under terrible and unjust circumstances.
