Kai and Ty Go To Hawaii is a fun picture book written by Adam T. Newman and illustrated by Susan G. Young. Ty and his cousin Kai go on vacation to Hawaii where they enjoy coconuts, sandy beaches and a magic show. The magician tells them about Pele, the Hawaiian goddess of lightning, wind and fire. She curses anyone who takes lava rocks off her island. The boys don’t believe the curse, but Kai slips a rock into Ty’s backpack before they fly home. Oh, boy! Ty wakes up with a doggy tail in his mouth, pink laundry and worse. Desperate to get rid of the rock, he gets stuck in an elevator while trying to return it. He’s got to get that rock back to Hawaii!

Kai and Ty Go to Hawaii has full color illustrations on every page that are sure to appeal to kids. To make it even more fun, Susan G. Young has placed hidden pictures throughout the book. Of boogers. Which is brilliant. I couldn’t find them all, but I’m absolutely sure that some kids will look and look until they do. The semi-rhyming story is cute and is definitely enhanced by the pictures. I thought all the bad things that happened to Ty were pretty funny. Adam T. Newman figured out one bit of bad luck after another and all of it is stuff kids can relate to. Kai and Ty Go to Hawaii is a well-written and fun picture book for kids, especially boys.
