Keeper of the Lost Flame by Rose M Delorane picks up as Lit travels to Mountainview, drawing the attention of Morta and the shapeshifters who are after the Key of Janu. Guided by his great-great-grandfather, Lit eventually clears the path to Mountainview, where he meets Greta, who has a subtle command over Mountainview’s secrets and slowly becomes more than a guide. Meanwhile, Lit collaborates with the Lorens to investigate an ancient spire, uncovering parchments and artifacts tied to long-forgotten powers. With protective tools and growing courage, Lit must run a virtual gauntlet of danger, including the Cemetery of Eternal Sorrow and the Wraith's trials, to understand the legacies critical to the hidden forces shaping Mountainview, his role in them, and what he must do to spare the village.
Keeper of the Lost Flame by Rose M. Delorane is book two in The Legend of Little Square trilogy, but it reads reasonably well as a standalone. This is a fantastically imagined tale, and although Delorane has a lot of spinning plates, she succeeds in making an ambitious coming-of-age arc wonderfully immersive. The worldbuilding is excellent, particularly Mountainview and its tangible, lived-in details so that each setting feels lived-in, from the cozy tavern and theater to the darker and more ominous drivers within its confines—including a terrifying three-headed beast. Tobias, an Emissary of the Peacekeepers and safeguard from the War of Realms, is the most fascinating character to me, and one of the most Delphic I've come across in ages. Overall, this is a massive trilogy promise, and I look forward to seeing where it goes next in the third and final installment.
