Kenneth Runs Away From Home is a work of fiction in the animals, social issues, and interpersonal drama subgenres. It is penned and illustrated by author Lakella L. Davenport and is a picture book intended for young and newly independent readers. In this charming tale, we meet our titular character Kenneth, a little mouse who decides he has to run away after he accidentally breaks several things in the family home. So begins a quest for the rest of the family to find Kenneth and reassure him that accidents happen in life, but family love is unconditional, and things will work out all right in the end.

Author Lakella L. Davenport has crafted a delightful little story with an interesting and important moral for young children learning to socialize and deal with conflict resolution. I thought it was a really interesting example to show that, even though Kenneth’s parents said all the right things and showed him nothing but love, his own insecurities caused him to run and made his family even more worried about him. This is an important lesson for young readers about listening to others, accepting love, and not beating themselves up. The illustrations of the mice were adorable, bright, and engaging, and the dialogue style is complex enough to help new independent readers prepare for the chapter book stage after these kinds of books. Overall, I would recommend Kenneth Runs Away From Home as both a bedtime story and an interesting classroom read that would inspire a lot of discussion for kids who are a bit clumsy themselves.
