In Killer Dreams by Vincent Donovan, for ten years Cassie Maclean has dealt with the effects of a tragic accident that left her mother in a coma. These events have led to a decline in her marriage and an estrangement from her father who seems to have moved on from his marriage. On the night of Thanksgiving, while clearing away the family dinner, she receives a call from the care facility that her mother has opened her eyes. Thus begins a series of shocking twists and turns as Cassie begins to piece together what happened that fateful night ten years ago. With her marriage, family, and career in jeopardy, Cassie does not give up. She is ready to confront anyone she suspects of having a hand in the tragedy that caused her mother to be labeled the Salem Witch.
Killer Dreams is a riveting story that centers on greed, selfishness, and the power of perseverance and redemption. This fast-paced thriller kept me engrossed to the last page. It starts off slowly and picks up pretty fast after Cassie gets a call from the long-term care facility. Vincent Donovan draws out the characters clearly and carefully. For instance, we see more of Cassie’s character as she grapples with her feelings of inadequacy and how, despite that, she remains relentless in her pursuit of the truth. I liked how the story builds up, and the author does not drag out the suspense. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and I would highly recommend it to fellow thriller enthusiasts.
