    Book Review

Reviewed by John Davies for Readers' Favorite

M.R. Mathias' second novel in the Wardstone Trilogy should not be read without a prior understanding of the first novel in the series. The story picks up at a point where the main characters in the first story have been scattered far and wide, leaving the reader who has not read Book One, the almost impossible task of gathering together the many threads the author lays before us. The story is developed through multiple points of view and it takes several chapters for these seemingly unrelated characters and events (especially if the reader has not read Book One) to come together. On the whole, the final result is satisfying, with most of the bad guys getting their just desserts.

The story is well written, with fine attention to detail and subtle handling of each character's development. The action scenes are stirring and the intimacy of relationships between characters is handled sensitively. This is a long novel but is eminently readable. While the good vs evil storyline is generally predictable, the subtle twists and turns add enough to keep the reader reading on towards the final outcomes. But wait – there is more to come!
