Kirby's Dilemma is a delightful, spine-chilling story. Iris Iglarsh's first middle-grade novel follows an eleven-year-old boy who becomes friends with a ghost. When Michael Benton was five years old, he almost drowned and saw a ghost for the first time. After six years, Michael still remembers that terrifying experience. Now that he and his family have moved into an old house near Chicago, he starts seeing and hearing strange things again. Michael concludes the house is haunted, and shortly after, he meets a ghost named Kirby. He learns that Kirby is the only ghost living in the house and needs his help. Kirby tells him that their friendship and shared secrets should remain between them. Will Michael keep his promise to help Kirby with his supernatural dilemma?
No one wants to see a ghost, let alone be friends with one, but Kirby's Dilemma proves that ghosts can be friendly and need help. Iris Iglarsh has crafted a heartily satisfying tale with a unique take on ghosts. It's charming and chilling in equal measure. This stirring adventure story has the right amount of scare, fun, and suspense for young readers. It features a haunted house, friendship, ghosts, bullying, and bravery. Kirby's Dilemma is the perfect addition to the library for any young reader just getting into the paranormal genre. It's beautifully written and teaches interesting things about the Mexican holiday, the Day of the Dead, the spirit world, and the importance of trusting your friends and believing in yourself.
