In Knights Unite (Peter Blue Series) by Laurel Colless, readers are taken on a fantasy adventure with Riva du Lac. As the story opens, Riva and Roly clean up sea garbage using a whaleboat designed by Professor Meriwether. As they suction plastic and other garbage dumped in the sea, they encounter an unusually huge ghost net with a swordfish and a fish boy named Shem trapped inside. This sets the tone for the epic events that unfold during Riva’s time at Spiral Hall. It becomes an environmental nightmare that puts Riva in a position to choose between following the rules and saving lives.

Laurel Colless’s writing shows discipline and structure, with every chapter broken down into bite-sized events to keep the reader’s interest. The pacing is well-balanced with moderate action from the very beginning when Riva discovers Shem and the swordfish entangled in the ghost net. The rescue mission alone will have readers gulping and coming up for air right along with Riva as she and Roly work to save Shem and the swordfish. The added touch of educating readers along the way is a smart move. For example, the page with Riva’s 'unfun' facts about how much plastic is dumped into the sea and about swordfish being predators is incorporated in such a way that it doesn’t detract from the premise. There is so much action, especially as things rev up when Riva and Mr. Dean find out the truth about Albacore. The events keep coming, page after page, while the author teaches us all a lesson in environmental dumping and the dangers it poses to sea life. Knights Unite should be on everyone’s book list.
