Kuni Ruto by Llewellyn Burgess is a political fantasy that follows the story of Arinko Xelha. This begins a decade after the Queendom of Xelha’s civil war with Arinko as the new queen. Young and inexperienced in politics, Arinka was passionate about rebuilding her damaged nation with compassion and understanding. She believed in being one with her people rather than ruling them with authority or fear. However, her lack of political experience invited the court to target her and her rule. Lord Sigurd Kolo, an experienced politician who lost the civil war, is her biggest enemy and finds every opportunity to undermine her power. His influence is still enough to shake the power structure of the kingdom. As tension rises in the kingdom and at court, Arinko needs to find a way to keep her crown and protect her people from the chaos.

Author Llewellyn Burgess created a very entertaining and reality-driven story that I loved. Usually, I don’t enjoy political fiction, but Kuni Ruto was the exception. I think I enjoyed it more because of Arinko and how easy she was to relate to. I formed a connection with her from the very moment she was introduced, and I started to root for her. She was human, exceptionally well-rounded, and had complete growth into a leader. I loved how she was determined to do well for her people, knew she wasn’t a perfect leader, but that didn’t stop her from trying. Viviana was her companion and bodyguard, but she was also a listening ear, a supporter, and her biggest cheerleader. I enjoyed their friendship and chemistry the most. The pace of the story was perfect, the action relentless, and the descriptions strong enough to make me feel like I was right next to Arinko. I cannot praise Kuni Ruto highly enough.
