An all-female squad had been vigorously trained for two years for a top secret mission in which they would stay out in the field for 120 days, testing America's latest and most advanced military weapon. As their mission drew closer, the world was slowly edging towards World War III and tension between rival countries was increasing every day. In full glory and full of excitement, the 6 women set off on the stealth mission. All seemed to be going well with the mission save for a few challenges until, 116 days into the mission, all hell erupted around the world. A nuclear war broke out, leaving behind massive damage to property, a communication blackout and hundreds of millions of lives lost. But even worse, it destroyed the country's chain of command, leaving the surviving military divisions susceptible to rogue activities. However, unknown to most was the existence and power of the 3 military tanks that were on their first field mission and the squad of 6 courageous women who would defend their country, no matter what.
Last Defenders by David K. Brown is a compelling war story of courage and patriotism. The level of both mission and technical details is so deep and completely gripping. David K. Brown goes into full mission and technical details without turning the story into a boring tale and these details added to my understanding of the story and hence to my reading thrill. The level of detail vividly brought the action to life and I could even close my eyes and picture Captain Pruitt and her crew as they maneuvered thousands of miles in the mighty tanks. David K. Brown also created characters that could stand out independently and yet complement each other perfectly. The novel portrays a team so rare and yet so natural and so memorable. It is a one of a kind war story; one that you read now but remember for years to come.
