“ The world doesn’t need heroes. It needs good people who are willing to stand up and do what’s right.”

This is one of many quotes I find very reflective of our age and it’s the one that stood out most to me.

I didn’t know what to expect from THE DARK REALM. I loved THE CROWN OF KINGS and was excited for its follow up but I’m always nervous about series that revolve around quests. They can become very formulaic with repetitive plot points. So when I read THE DARK REALM, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it’s nothing like THE CROWN OF KINGS, and I mean that as high praise!

A lot of what Mr. Sears did right with his first book is done right again here. The character growth for Alex Stone is excellent without being repetitive. He still struggles with accepting his destiny as the Last Star Knight (putting on the Crown of Kings has heightened Alex’s senses and abilities) while wishing to return home to his friends and family. He never asked for any of this yet finds himself frequently thrust into situations where he has to embrace his destiny. Without revealing spoilers, there’s a striking chapter during the climax that is very well done and shows Mr. Sears has a wonderful grasp of his main character.

The rest of the characters are given more to do with backstories fleshed out more given they’re present throughout the book this time. Both Maggie and Kirk Anderson have enlarged roles and we really get to understand their motivations. There’s a brilliant chapter in the middle of the book where Anderson relives some of the darkest and happiest moments of his life. I was riveted! New characters are welcome and also given plenty of depth so as to not feel like cardboard cutouts.

The action is just as gripping as in the first book. Mr. Sears shows a propensity for action and suspense. The world building continues here as this dark dystopian future is given more depth with lots of political intrigue.

The plot isn’t as straightforward as THE CROWN OF KINGS, with multiple twists thrown in throughout. Allegiances are frequently questioned and you never know who can truly be trusted. The overall plot isn’t as strong as THE CROWN OF KINGS, but the strength of the characters, the action and the world building more than compensate.

One of the things I found quite intriguing, however, was some of the commentary expressed by certain characters throughout. Themes of corruption and heroism and sacrifice are tackled with surprising maturity and depth. The most prominent theme, however, is that of death and how we handle it. I found the reflections of the characters to be very thought-provoking. This isn’t just a book that’s fun and entertaining, but also takes time to challenge the reader to think.

My biggest gripe with book one was the pacing as there times where it felt sluggish. Not this time. THE DARK REALM is very well-paved, moving briskly while still taking time for exposition and character work without it feeling like it’s dragged down. I certainly wanted to keep turning each page!

Overall, this is another excellent entry into this young series. If Mr. Sears continues with this quality of work, there’s no doubt in my mind that this will go down as a classic series for all readers!

Alexander Stone continues to grow into one of the genre's more relatable young heroes, while Maggie Anderson and Kirk Anderson emerge as equally compelling figures whose personal struggles add depth and emotional resonance to the larger conflict.

What elevates The Dark Realm beyond a typical middle installment is its willingness to embrace consequences. Choices made throughout the novel culminate in a climax that fundamentally reshapes the series, introducing new threats while forcing its heroes to confront responsibility, faith, and the cost of hope itself. Although some mythology-heavy passages could be streamlined, the novel's memorable characters, expansive worldbuilding, and powerful emotional core make it a captivating continuation of the Legend of the Last Star Knight saga and a sequel that leaves readers eager for the next chapter.
