Jonathan Sears’s Legend of the Last Star Knight: The Dark Realm follows Alex Stone, a Winnipeg teenager flung across time into a galaxy where the ancient Star Knights have become prophecy. Aboard the mining ship The Avenger, Alex works beside Maggie Anderson while hiding how much he misses Earth and how little he wants the powers awakening inside him. When the Alliance starcruiser Pandarah vanishes during a secret test, Maggie’s brother Sean is linked to the Prometheus Fighters suspected of the attack. Alex, Maggie, Kirk Anderson, and The Avenger crew are pulled into the search before the stolen ship can become a weapon. As dreams of home grow stronger and the Dark Realm moves closer, Alex must decide what kind of knight he is willing to become.

Jonathan Sears’s Legend of the Last Star Knight is sweeping science fiction, and Alex’s story feels huge without losing the boy beneath the title. The technology is vast, and the world-building is completely fleshed out, especially through Stellaris, the experimental device built to restart dying stars. That single invention changes the whole galaxy because its purpose can be twisted from creation into terror depending on who holds it. I also love how the author gives the secondary characters complete lives. Sean Anderson is not just a rebel brother, because his marriage to Zella and their unborn child make his loyalty to Maximus Sinclair more painful. Maggie is excellent too, especially when she refuses to let Alex disappear into prophecy. Well written and immersive, readers who enjoy large-scale science fiction with real heart will adore this book.
