Christina Engela’s Lifetime is a science fiction novella that weaves together love, survival, and the mysteries of the universe. The story follows Harald and Virian Vanderbilt, a power couple who runs a space prospecting company. Their lives take a tragic turn when Virian’s ship, the Alluvion, crashes on an uncharted planet. While Harald embarks on a relentless quest to find her, Virian survives the ordeal alone, relying on her resourcefulness and hope. Unknown to Harald, the Alluvion has encountered a time anomaly, altering the course of her fate in unimaginable ways. This tale of resilience and discovery explores themes of love, loss, and humanity’s impact on the environment, all set against the vast and unpredictable backdrop of space.
I enjoyed Lifetime for its compelling blend of emotional depth and speculative science fiction. The story’s focus on the enduring bond between Harald and Virian adds a heartfelt layer to the thrilling narrative. Virian’s journey of survival on an alien planet was particularly inspiring, showcasing the strength of the human spirit. The time travel twist was a fascinating element, offering a bittersweet reflection on fate and the passage of time. Christina Engela’s ability to balance action, emotion, and thought-provoking themes makes this a memorable read. Ultimately, I reflected on Harald's apparent selfishness and lack of concern for their children before making his decision. This narrative aspect prompted considerable thought, highlighting the book's profound impact. If you love science fiction that combines heartfelt human experiences with imaginative twists, Lifetime is worth your time.
