Lilah the Flower Girl for Hire by Isi Emefieh is a thought-provoking and fun read. Lilah, a seven-year-old girl, is a hardworking entrepreneur; her flower girl business is very popular. She can perform her duties no matter what the size or theme of the wedding. Lilah has dressed up as a pirate, a fairy, and a ghost, all to accommodate the setting of the events. The wedding couples, and their guests show their appreciation for Lilah. On the other hand, Mr. Bigsby of “BB’s wedding and things!” feels very underappreciated. He is responsible for planning all the weddings that Lilah attends, and he feels that she steals the attention he deserves for his hard work. Hence, he devises a plan to put Lilah out of business. How will Lilah overcome this situation?

I enjoyed reading Lilah the Flower Girl for Hire. More importantly, I strongly believe that Isi Emefieh’s target audience will also enjoy her work. The illustrations are visually appealing. I like how expressive all the characters are, especially Lilah and Mr. Bigsby. The characters are interesting and play their roles perfectly. Mr. Bigsby is an intriguing antagonist with a complex character arc. I also found it heartwarming that Lilah’s mother comforted her during a difficult time. The story is well-paced. Emefieh uses very simple words and sentences suitable for young readers. I appreciate that a central message in this work is that machinery cannot replace human warmth in the workplace. I believe children will be motivated to be hard workers like Lilah after reading this book.
