Louis' Preoccupation with Napoleon Caesar by Michael Ulysses Gilbert is a psychological drama that follows Louis Ney, a young boy troubled by delusions about his female teachers. Since the third grade, Louis has believed he was destined for greatness, influenced by the voice of a serpent named Moloch that whispers secrets of success to him while also warning of a potential downfall. He observes that all his teachers trace their lineage to great leaders, except for Miss Maria Tolemy, his high school English teacher. Louis's obsession with her spirals out of control when he discovers she is dating their school's woodshop teacher, Mr. Rumstitch. This revelation ignites a murderous rage within him, leading to a bloody incident that lands him in a mental institution. However, his trials continue as he faces death itself.

Louis' Preoccupation with Napoleon Caesar is a thought-provoking tale that delves into themes of jealousy, obsession, betrayal, and the quest for identity and control over one’s mind. It explores the destructive power of unchecked desire, questioning the nature of love and the influence of imagined authority figures in the pursuit of personal ambition. The story is mind-bending, as it evokes sympathy for Louis while also inviting readers to fear the dark depths of his psyche. Readers gain insight into his trauma and the complexities of his mental state, raising questions about the fine line between genius and madness. Readers will find themselves questioning what is real and what is merely a projection of Louis' fractured mind. The well-written, engaging narrative is hard to put down. Michael Ulysses Gilbert challenges readers' intellect by including historical elements related to legacy and identity and covering grief and the various ways it can manifest. This intriguing story with compelling characters will keep you engrossed until the very end.
