Theresa Crandall has spent decades of summers at Whimsy Towers, the Cape Cod oceanfront home she inherited from her grandmother. Her attorney husband Kevin spent most of the summer in Alexandria, VA, and he would visit when possible. The story begins when one of their three sons had a tragic accident and Theresa’s secrets may be revealed. Although she is a writer and illustrator, she appears to be experiencing some mental and physical decline. Whether this is due to aging, overwhelming stress and grief, or illness, it leaves her feeling lost at times. She also learns more about the relationships of their other two sons who are dealing with their own problems and finding joy in unexpected ways. Author Ann Hymes has written an intriguing novel full of reflection and promise in Love & Lies: A Secret Memoir.
The writing in this book is well-crafted. The inclusion of poetry and music lyrics adds an enlightening element to the plot. Although the story included many scenes from the past, they were interwoven so smoothly that the tale was always easy to follow. Each character is interesting in unique ways. Mattie, the housekeeper and cook, is not highly educated but has a keen sense of each person’s needs. The sons, Kevin Jr. and Tim who show heartfelt devotion to their parents, have distinctive characteristics. The main character, Theresa, holds the reader’s fascination throughout Love & Lies: A Secret Memoir by Ann Hymes. This story about family bonds is truly compelling!
