Love Them Do by Ian Croskell is a daring, imaginative reimagining of Beatles lore wrapped in the trappings of religious satire and speculative fiction. Set in a post-apocalyptic future where a new global faith centers around the Four (John, Paul, George, and Ringo), the plot follows a novitiate in the Lennonary—one of many sacred orders devoted to interpreting and preserving the Beatles 'Scripture.' Through layered storytelling and theological parody, Croskell explores how the band's music and messages of love, peace, and unity could evolve into a fully-fledged religious movement. As the protagonist wrestles with doubt, institutional contradictions, forbidden literature, and personal identity, readers are taken on a clever, humorous, and sometimes sobering exploration of devotion, dogma, memory, and the enduring power of art in shaping belief systems.

Ian Croskell’s writing is both witty and thought-provoking, brimming with cultural commentary, unexpected warmth, sharp insights, and clever wordplay. The plot unfolds gradually but with purpose, offering strong pacing in a story grounded more in ideas than action. The characters, particularly the questioning narrator, feel alive and well-crafted, while the themes—idol worship, peace, societal control, memory, and revisionist history—are skillfully interwoven. Love Them Do excels in its concept and characters, with a consistently engaging tone that blends reverence and irreverence in equal measure. This book is perfect for Beatles fans with a literary bent, and for readers who enjoy speculative fiction with a philosophical edge. I found it refreshingly original, surprisingly touching, deeply layered, and, at times, laugh-out-loud funny.
