Love Travels With Mommy by Natalie Burns begins with the cutest scene of a mom and her two young sons building a racetrack together! Then—boom—she has to break the news that she’s going away on a business trip. To keep the tears at bay, she promises to stay in touch with her boys and spins an incredible story to help them bridge the gap while she’s away. This fun tale takes the kids on a pirate voyage through New York City, including places like Central Park and the Statue of Liberty. Instead of gold, their mom reimagines her trip as a pirate hunting for a chest that holds a family photo and a loving note. It’s a literal treasure hunt through a concrete jungle that leads right back to the reunion at the front door. Can an exciting story really make a week apart fly by?

Love Travels With Mommy by Natalie Burns is a fast-paced, rhyming children’s book that handles a common family issue—a parent’s temporary absence—with a lot of energy. The vibrant illustrations by Maru Vargas really bring the whole pirate adventure to life on every page. The change from the living room floor to a high-seas adventure in the middle of Manhattan keeps the story moving quickly. I liked how the author used specific landmarks to give the trip some personality, making the distance seem more like an adventure than a void. Overall, the way the mom uses the pirate persona to stay connected to her sons is a clever piece of world-building for a picture book. The bond between the characters is the main focus here, shown through compelling moments like phone calls and shared imagination. The writing is snappy and engaging from start to finish. It's also very easy for young readers to follow along. While no book could ever replace a parent, this is a good resource for families facing frequent separations. It provides a real way for parents to keep that connection alive with their kids, especially when they're miles away from home.
