Ruby gets to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. Ruby invites her friend, Violet, to join them for the celebration, but she is saddened to hear Violet make fun of her with their other classmates. It’s difficult to face others who don’t understand and, consequently, show little respect for who you are and the beliefs that define you. In Laura Lee Rittman’s Lucky Ruby, the joy of both festival occasions rings through Ruby’s home and back into her heart. Her friend Violet does come and she learns how to enjoy and celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas. It’s a great learning experience for Violet, but also a renewal of the joy of Ruby’s combined faiths.

Laura Lee Rittman’s picture book, Lucky Ruby, is a Hanukkah and Christmas Holiday book. Told in simple language so young readers can easily follow along and improve their reading skills, this story follows Ruby as she faces the challenge of ignorance, when others judge her for something they know nothing about. The illustrations are bright, bold, and colorful – absolutely superb – and they help move the story along. At the end of the book is an easy-to-follow recipe for latkes, something Ruby and Violet make together during the festivities. The valuable lessons learned in this little treasure include respect for others, the bonds of family and friendship, and inclusion. As Violet sums it up at the end of the festivities, “You’re really lucky you get to celebrate both Hanukkah and Christmas.” This is a great story, full of joy and laughter. Loved it!
