Beneath the Bishop’s Bones by the talented E.R. Barr is the second paranormal fantasy thriller in The Vatican Archives Series. For four hundred years, since the twelfth century, the St. Thomas shrine in the Canterbury Cathedral in England was known for the miraculous healing powers of The Regale of France, a legendary ancient jewel. But during the Reformation, King Henry VIII destroyed the shrine, and The Regale disappeared. Rolling on to the present day, in Rome, Monsignor Daniel Azar, a rising star in archaeology and an adopted nephew of the Pope, translated an ancient Babylonian tablet foretelling the end of the world. In the hope of averting the apocalypse, the Pope sends Daniel to Canterbury Cathedral to find The Regale. But will Daniel succeed?
E.R. Barr’s Beneath the Bishop’s Bones is one of the most riveting paranormal fantasy thrillers I've read recently. I liked the eventful plot packed with paranormal surprises, myths, otherworldly creatures, ghouls, and the standoff between good and evil. I loved the subtle humor and the easygoing young King Henry IX (a.k.a. Harry). Grigio the wolfhound was adorable, and I look forward to the new adventures Daniel promised him! But most of all, I liked the ingenious portrayal of the unification of the Anglican, Catholic, and Protestant churches to protect humanity from destruction. I highly recommend this riveting story to apocalyptic fantasy fans who can digest a dose of graphic violence. Readers interested in English history, the Anglican and Catholic faiths, and Babylonian myths will also find this novel thrilling.
