Malevolence: A Hollywood Mystery is a work of fiction in the murder mystery genre, and serves as the sequel to Deception. It is aimed at the adult reading audience and was penned by Britt Lind. The book continues the story of Rosemeria Baker who, having made the move from detective to prosecutor, continues to serve justice whilst she and her partner Josh pursue happiness in Hollywood. As Josh sits on the precipice of fame and fortune, Rosemeria is brought back into the world of murder and intrigue when a prostitute is murdered and two more become targets seeking her protection.
This is a densely packed mystery that grounds the intrigue of Rosemeria’s involvement in the murder investigation with her supportive husband who is working hard to make it big as a musician in Hollywood. Britt Lind has created two excellent lead characters in Rosemeria and Josh, and their loving and supportive dynamic provides a unique backdrop to the grim and dark world of murder and international conspiracy. The mystery at the heart of Malevolence is highly engaging with enough twists and turns in the tale to keep audiences on their toes and excited to read what happens next. The dark nature of the subject matter is excellently counterbalanced by Josh’s lighter sub-plot about getting his big break. As with the previous story, Rosemeria proves herself to be a capable investigator and an excellent pair of eyes for the audience to engage with the core mystery. The additional obstacles provided by her professional life contribute to the unpredictable directions that the plot takes as it moves forward.
