I loved the different voices in Maniacs in the Fourth Dimension by YT Whitemansson. During the annual Convention-con, a bunch of fans are gathered in expectation of the arrival of Mr. Abraxas, the mysterious author of the comic book '365 Heavens.' This story is told by alternating characters. Lempo, the one that's a "little bit Asian looking" and sent to go get Isaac, who's recovering rather badly from a recent breakup with his redheaded girlfriend. Cleitus and Jove have been friends with the boys in the pack forever. These four friends are on their way to Convention-con, where they can't wait to meet Abraxas, the mysterious comic book author with a weirdly existential point of view on life. Mr. Abraxas encourages the fan boys to see life from a new vantage point and so begins their wild and weird adventure in this tale.
Chapter four of YT Whitemansson's Maniacs in the Fourth Dimension is titled "Rosencrantz and Guildenstern" and that summed up this book for me. In high school, I read the absurd story Rosencrantz and Guildenstern Are Dead and this story reminds me a lot of that story. Weird, different, unique. Sarcastic but also funny, lyrical and musical with bad language, the way the characters talk to each other, tough and gruff like they hate each other, but have really been friends forever. I loved the sense of loyalty that surrounded these comrades on their journey into the unknown. They were able to put aside their confusion, loss, anger and frustration to seek a higher power and learn about the true meaning of life.
