Marcus and His Buttons is written by Medhanie Nebay Embaye and illustrated by Magdalena Agu. Marcus, a young boy who lived in Eritrea, Africa, loved to play games with his friends outside. He and his friends would compete for buttons when they played together. Knowing that he had no buttons to play with, Marcus took one from a present that was wrapped underneath the Christmas tree without asking for his parents’ permission first. Each time he lost a button, he would take another in hopes of winning them all back before Christmas Day. Will Marcus be able to win the buttons from his Christmas present back, or will he wind up taking the last one from the nice red shirt? What should he have done instead of taking the buttons without permission from his parents?

I absolutely adored the story of Marcus and His Buttons by Medhanie Nebay Embaye. I enjoyed reading about the games Marcus and his friends engaged in and how they won buttons in each competition. Kids will definitely enjoy the fun and the mischief in this story, as well as the important lessons about honesty and doing the right thing. I absolutely loved learning about the cultural differences in celebrating the holidays as well. The illustrations by Magdalena Agu are beautiful and work well with the story, and will keep kids interested in seeing what Marcus and his friends will play next. I hope that Embaye and Agu team up for more books like this one to teach kids valuable life lessons with fun and relatable characters and behaviors.
