Mastering Land Use Politics, by professional strategist Patrick Fitzgerald Fox, is, as the title suggests, a guide that aids land developers in achieving success and forming lasting relationships in the industry. From facing unfounded public scrutiny to spiteful opponents, Patrick has seen it all, and he discusses this intensively in Mastering Land Use Politics. Patrick provides thoughtful insight and advice on how to navigate challenges by strategizing and planning effectively and successfully. He also documents the rights of developers and their opponents, respectively, and gives a clear view of both sides with examples of past cases. Interestingly, political barriers aren’t just limited to concerns over environmental sustainability, but also sentimental, nostalgic residents who refuse to adapt. Patrick stresses the importance of building sustainable relationships and credibility in the community if you want to be successful and overcome these types of barriers. Mastering Land Use Politics provides an interesting take on the many issues land developers and strategists face, and also the rewards that come with it.
Hilarious and extremely insightful, Mastering Land Use Politics offers a fresh take on this cutthroat industry as well as the sometimes dirty tactics opponents use to sabotage a developer’s plans. The author’s charming wit and dry sense of humor had me laughing often, as did his anecdotes. If you’re thinking of starting out or just want professional advice, then Patrick Fitzgerald Fox’s Mastering Land Use Politics is just the book for you. As I read, I became frustrated at how unfair the system can be. Deals that offer great benefits to the community get derailed because of short-sightedness and plain stupidity. I was shocked at the poor reasoning behind some of the standpoints. Also, I was amazed at what developers have to go through just to win the vote! The stand-offs, the spiteful competitors, and easily swayed judges and skittish politicians are a lot to deal with, but as Patrick points out, it is well worth it.
