Metallic Heart by Liahona West takes place in a world turned upside-down due to several catastrophic events that have caused great suffering, destruction, and distress. In this ghost land littered with carcasses of the past, there are pockets of human habitation, then there are those who have taken advantage of the chaos. These individuals revel in their freedom due to a lack of a recognized authority by engaging in senseless violence and acts of anarchy. Eloise is one of the inhabitants of this new world order and is fortunate to live in a compound with an egalitarian leader. She is damaged due to experiencing a traumatic event, compounded by the ordeal of losing her parents at a young age. There are other survivors who live in a village of savage, violent, people. Then there is the looming threat of the sinister scientist and her goons. She hovers over this new post-apocalyptic world and her evil footprint is prevalent amongst numerous survivors. Bannack appears to be one of the victims being controlled by the evil scientist to do her bidding. He meets up with Eloise by sheer coincidence and they begin a journey that leads to the uncovering of lies and secrets, littered with the debris of a violent, traumatic past.

Metallic Heart by Liahona West is an intriguing story about survivors of an apocalypse. The tale moves at a steady pace and is about young people who have experienced great suffering. They have had to ‘adapt or die’ in this upside-down world. Everyone has lost loved ones and is experiencing an ordeal of some sort. The way the characters cope and live with the unpredictable aftermath of the violence is explored. The author is most familiar with this genre and accurately depicts the circumstances surrounding this new post-apocalyptic reality. In this new reality, the world has crashed and burned, and people must make life and death choices. The author expertly uses these two young people, Eloise and Bannack, to describe the new normal. The story shows a world in ruins, those who strive to make the best of a very bad situation, and the actions of one person that could potentially derail the progress made due to selfish and self-centered motives. Fans of dystopian fiction will enjoy this book.
