Miles Ahead by David A. Janover PE tells the story of a journey in math and engineering. Miles has always loved numbers and was brilliant at math, even in the first grade. As he moves up through schools, his knowledge and skills grow, and he moves on to engineering. This is the story of how a curious young boy became a professional engineer and all the obstacles and challenges he had to overcome along the way. When you ask kids what they want to be when they grow up, most will tell you they want to be a policeman or a doctor, but few consider engineering as a career choice. Hopefully, this book will change minds, not just of the kids but their parents, too. Given that the author is a professional engineer, I did wonder if the story was based on his own life.
Miles Ahead: A Journey in Math and Engineering by David A. Janover is a truly inspiring story for young readers. It’s a very well-written story, easy for young readers to follow, filled with lovely illustrations, and it highlights more than just engineering as a job. It’s also about learning to overcome challenges and having the confidence to stride out and do what’s needed to achieve your goals, especially with the support of your friends, family, and peers behind you. The world is bigger than the standard jobs that people might consider for career choices, and engineering plays just as important a role in the world. I highly recommend this book for all young readers, and not just the boys, either!
