Millicent and the Alien Abduction by Robert Wright Jr. follows Millie, a teenage vampire hunted by alien feline warriors led by Captain Nimbus, in a hybrid paranormal science fiction tale. After being captured with no vital signs, Millie awakens with supernatural strength and blood-drinking powers, killing several hunters and escaping confinement. She rescues Binky, a human with blood cancer, and begins turning her into a vampire to save her life. Meanwhile, Nimbus and Medical Officer Dhegu investigate Millie’s nature, struggling to find ways to kill or contain her. As Millie works through the ship’s tunnels with Binky, they find themselves at odds with the alien hunters and deadly creatures called scrags, seeking freedom in a fight for survival as she is doggedly pursued by those determined to eliminate her.
Robert Wright Jr.’s Millicent and the Alien Abduction is a wonderfully unique story that pulls readers into it from the word go. The science fiction components and commands, like Captain Nimbus’ strategic decisions, Dhegu’s secretive investigations, and the series of interactions between the alien crew and the imprisoned humans, are excellent. I thought that the creation and textured depictions of the scrags are brilliant, and Wright does well in unfurling Millie’s extraordinary abilities and the shift of power dynamics onboard. The book balances detailed descriptions of the environment and on-board sections like the medical bay with fast-paced action scenes, dripping with thrilling escape attempts, hunts, and surprising alliances. Overall, this book is the perfect combination of what readers enjoy most about the two genres it brings together, in an arc that is as suitable as it is entertaining to readers of all ages. Very highly recommended.
