Giving up pacifiers can be a difficult obstacle for many toddlers to overcome. Fortunately, Lindsey Coker Harris introduces us to a superhero that can help with this transition in her illustrated children’s book, Milo the Pacifier Hero. Complete with a cape and mask, Milo travels to the homes of kids mature enough to give up the comfort of a pacifier, quietly collecting these devices while the children sleep. At one house, a little boy wakes up due to a barking dog, leading Milo to explain that the boy no longer needs his pacifier. The small child gladly hands his pacifier to the superhero when he realizes that Milo will take it, along with the rest of his collection, to babies in need.

Whether it’s dependence, habit, or fear that prevents children from giving up pacifiers, believing that their used ones will benefit others may be an effective way to wean hesitant kids off these comfort items. Lindsey Coker Harris’s story will resonate with preschoolers due to its superhero theme, rhyming stanzas, and beautiful illustrations. I appreciated the calming, warm tones of the artwork, along with the way that the easy-to-follow storyline helps kids feel good about growing out of the childhood pacifier phase. And the final page offers a certificate of bravery that will reinforce the child’s resolve. For parents who want to help wean their children off pacifiers, Milo the Pacifier Hero is not just a great tool but is an enjoyable story that your kids will want to read over and over again.
